6. Robert McNutt ("Mack")2 Steele (Aaron, 1)4. Born, 8 Jul 1831, in Maury Co., Tennessee. Died, 1890, in Independence Co., Arkansas. Tradition states he was a school teacher.
In 1893, Jane Steele, Robert's widow, petitioned the court to sell his land (N1/2 of SE 1/4, SW 1/4 of SE 1/4, NE1/4 of the SW 1/4, and NE of SW 1/4, Section 23, Township 15 North Range 7 West) to pay a $586 debt to James Frank Steele. Mary (Steele) Baxter and Susan (Steele) Hodges also petitioned the court not to sell the land because they felt it was an attempt (or at least their husbands did) to defraud the other heirs. They claimed that the debt had been paid before Robert's death. In addition, Frank and his brother George Steele had use of the farm and personal property since their father's death and had by that time disposed of the personal property or appropriated for their own use.
Apparently the case did not go far because James Frank Steele was paid the $586 January 22, 1894 while living in Noble, Lamar? County, Texas (Robert M. Steele Probate Papers, County Court House, Batesville, Independence County, Arkansas).
Robert married Jane Eleanor McKelvey5, daughter of John McKelvey and Susan Mullins, 3 Feb 1851, in Maury Co., Tennessee. Born, Sep 1833, in Bedford Co., Tennessee. Died, after 1900, in Independence Co., Arkansas. Children:

He married 28 Aug. 1910 to Julia Lizzie Suttle, born 4 Jan. 1883 and died 15 Jan. 1913. He remarried to a woman nicknamed "Babe" and had a son James born 1915 who died in 1974.
Frank Steele apparently had a bit of a mean streak. One story says he put something like horse liniment in his father's bath water. Another story says that his brother-in-law William Sylvester Baxter had a potato house, that is, a small, cool cave where he stored potatoes. William started to notice that someone was stealing his potatoes. One day he laid in wait to see who it was the thief. It was the black hired hand of Frank Steele. Frank had been sending the man down to the cave to get the potatoes while he waited back in the wagon. William shot and wounded the hired hand and then went after his brother-in-law. Frank heard the shots and took off in the wagon. William followed Frank back to his home and kept him holed up for awhile shouting various threats on his person.

Notes for AARON STEELE: Steele Family
This article will discuss the paternal ancestry of Mary Emma Steele, wife of William Sylvester Baxter. According to sources received over ten years ago that have not been verified, the Steele family were of Scotch-Irish descent and immigrated to the colonies around 1700. John Steele owned a farm in Delaware in 1707 and served as a elder in Head of Christiana Church in New Castle (Presbytery). It is believed his son was James Steele who died in 1751. He is said to have married Mary Alexander whose Scotch-Irish family also immigrated early and lived predominately in the Cecil County, Maryland area before many moved into Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.
Members of the Alexander family were signers of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence 1775, a North Carolina forerunner of the Declaration of Independence. Two of James and Mary Steele's sons were Isaac and Aaron Steele whose descendants later came into Tennessee. Aaron is said to have married Violet Alexander. Some sources give her maiden name as Polk. The Polk family was closely connected to the Alexanders(Underwood and Cozby family data,1982).The Aaron Steele family lived in the part of old 96 District in South Carolina which is now Abbeville County. Aaron Steele and his son William both served in the Revolutionary War in South Carolina. Violet Steele died prior to 1782 since tradition states that Tories took her deathbed out from under her. In November 1782, Aaron remarried to Elizabeth Cozby (Underwood and Cozby family data,1982).
Revolutionary War claims were filed by Aaron Steel and his second wife for a saddle lost in 1780 by Aaron and for 100 pounds of flour used by the Militia in 1782 (Comptroller General Audited Accounts AA 7335, SC Archives, Columbia).
Aaron died in 1795 and left his wife Elizabeth and the following children: William, James, Aaron, Abner Alexander, and Jane/Jean. James Steele moved to Maury County, Tennessee by 1810 and lived near some of his Uncle Isaac Steele's children. He died in 1823, leaving his wife Hannah and the following children: Elizabeth, Esther, James, Jane, Nathaniel Harrison, Rachel, William, and Aaron, the will executor.
During the War of 1812 , nineteen year old Aaron Steele enlisted October 1813 at Fayetteville, Lincoln County, Tennessee and served in Captain McKnight's Company of Tennessee Militia. He served at Talladega, Alabama and was discharged in Huntsville, Alabama on 1 January 1814. The conflict at Talladega occurred November 9, 1813. During the previous August, the Creek Indians nearly massacred the inhabitants of Fort Mims near Mobile, Alabama. This incident opened the Creek War. As a result of this massacre, Andrew Jackson, major general of the Tennesse Militia, put together 2000 volunteers to go up against the Creeks. As the volunteers headed toward Mobile, Jackson was notified that Leslie's Fort at Talladega was in danger from hostile Creeks. Talladega was an Indian town of friendly Creeks and the hostile Indians were threatening to destroy every friendy Indian village if they refused to fight with them. Tired, hungry, and sick, Jackson and his men arrived at Fort Strother, thirty miles from Talladega. On November 7, Jackson received word from an Indian courier that danger was eminent for Talladega. The volunteers were moved out at midnight and marched within 6 miles of Talladega. At 8 am on the 9th, the engagement began and lasted for an hour and a half. More than 500 Indians were killed. Nineteen volunteers were killed.
Aaron Steele married Nancy M. Davis in 1819 at the home of her parents in Mooresville, Tennessee and they had several children, many of whom came to Independence and Sharp Counties, Arkansas (Nancy Steele War of 1812 Pension Application 1870-1878, W. O. #15169, W.C. #10748, National Archives). The Steeles and the related families of Benton, Kennedy, and Ford came to Arkansas about 1853. The Craftons who may be related to the Steeles through the Davis family may have accompanied these families. A Christiana Davis was a grandmother to Robert, Tilman, and Martha Crafton.
