Descendants of WILLIAM GIFFORD
Generation No. 1
WILLIAM GIFFORD was born on 28 Mar 1749/50 in South Kingstown, RI, He married MARY in 1770. He died after the 1830 census but probably before Nov 1831 in Sullivan Co, TN. On 22 Mar 1770, William GIFFORD was disowned by the Nine Partners Monthly Meeting of Dutchess Co NY for marrying out of unity. Quakers in this country started meeting in each others homes. There were enough of them that by 1744, the quarterly meeting changed to a monthly meeting for Dutchess County, called the Oblong and Nine Partners Meeting, given the common names of their general locations.
Pursuant an act of General Assembly of this province passed the 19th of February 1755, Entituled an Act for Regulating the militia of the Colony of New York. Those for Dutchess County are as follows vizt Dutchess County Quakers: 23d - William Gifford of Oswego in Beekmans precinct, Farmer
A muster roll of the 5th Dutchess County Militia Regiment dated 10 Mar 1778 has William GIFFORD 2nd Lieutenant. The 5th Regiment was composed almost exclusively of men from the Beekman‐Union Vale area. The 20 Oct 1779 muster roll says that vice GIFFORD removed from the county. This is about the time that William GIFFORD left for TN.
The State of Franklin was set up in 1784 out of the westerly portion of the colonial state of North Carolina. Shortly after the War of Independence the original colonies were asked to pay for the war efforts and create a country with a sound financial policy. Since the taxing the population was difficult and cash was in short supply North Carolina ceded the western portion of the state to the federal coffers. Before the Congress could accept the offer North Carolina withdrew the offer. The citizens of the region decided that federal rule in the meantime was probably a good idea since North Carolina as a state had given this remote region little support in its fight with the Indians or protection from criminal refugees. They saw other benefits as an independent state in terms of taxation, representation and an understanding attitude toward local problems. Representatives of the North Carolina counties of Sullivan, Washington, Greene, and Davidson accepted the offer of cessation to federal territory. The state of Franklin existed for only four years to finally merge with the new state of Tennessee. William GIFFORD was in Sullivan County by Dec 1787, when he signed a petition opposing the proposed State of Franklin.
In 1788, William GIFFORD served in Capt. Thomas VINCENT's militia from Sullivan Co TN. He received militia payroll for serving in the Chicamauga Campaign as men who were "entitled to compensation for equipping themselves with horses and provisions".
On 29 Jun 1790, William GIFFORD of Sullivan Co purchased 174 acres in Sullivan Co from John SNODGRASS. William sold this land to Jabez GIFFORD on 3 Mar 1792. Jabez GIFFORD of Smith Co sold it to William GIFFORD Jr. on 15 Aug 1800. William GIFFORD Jr. sold it to John GIFFORD of Washington Co on 7 Feb 1804. And, finally, John GIFFORD sold it to William PALLET on 16 Mar 1804. The last deed described the land as the plantation where William GIFFORD Sr. and William GIFFORD Jr. now live.
William GIFFORD was listed on a 1 Sep 1793 to 3 Dec 1793 muster roll for Captain James Gregg's Company in the Sullivan County Militia. He had a substitute named Dye FORD.
On 4 Apr 1804, William GIFFORD purchased 80 acres in Sullivan County from Jeremiah TAYLOR. William sold this land to Wilkinson GIFFORD on 19 Jun 1823 for $1,000. Two days later Wilkinson leased the land to William GIFFORD and his wife Mary for $60 per year. The land was "whereon the said William GIFFORD now lives". Wilkinson sold it back to William on 27 Sep 1829. William sold it to Joseph GIFFORD of Smith County on 21 May 1830. Finally, Joseph sold it to Micajah ADAMS on 16 Nov 1831. William likely died in 1830 or 1831.
William GIFFORD appeared in tax lists for Sullivan Co, TN, in 1812.
William GIFFORD appeared in the 1830 US census in Sullivan Co, TN, (William GIFFORD, 1 male 70–80, 1 female 30–40, 1 female 70–80). Mary died after the 1830 census in Sullivan Co, TN.
