Descendants of Geoffrey Norreys

Generation No. 1

GEOFFREY NORREYS was born 1340 in England.   Lived in Tilney

It is believed that Geoffrey Le Norreys, born about 1320, in County Norfolk, England, is a descendant of Geoffrey Le Norreys of Bereford, Yorkshire. He was born about 1110 and died before 1170. He was the earliest known ancestor to carry the name Norreys. Prior to this time it was Noers. This Geoffrey was probably a descendant of William de Noers who died after 1086. His name appears in the "Domesday Book," a very large census taken in 1086 by William the Conqueror.
William de Noers was a steward to William when he became King of England. De Noers had fought with the King at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 when the Normans conquered the British Isle of Great Britain. The Normans had come from Normandy in what is now France. William, for his loyalty to the new King, was granted 33 manors along with lands in the areas which became known as Lancashire, Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, and Norfolk.
Geoffrey Le Norreys, born about 1110, possibly had a brother named Ivo Le Norreys, born about 1090. Geoffrey had four (4) known sons: William Le Norreys, of Osgodby and Bereford, Yorkshire, born about 1130, died before 1196. Hugh Le Norreys, of Scotforth, Lancashire, born about 1132, Robert Le Norreys, of South Cave, Yorkshire, born about 1134, died after 1184; and Phillip Le Norreys, of Merton, Lancashire, born about 1150, died after 1222. Geoffrey Le Norreys, born about 1320, is believed to decend from Robert Le Norreys of South Cave, Yorkshire.
Robert Le Norreys, born about 1134. His name is also spelled as Norreis, Norensis, and Norais. He held a knight's fee in Southhamptonshire and Gloustershire in 1166. He held the Riev Manor in Yorkshire in 1170 as Robert Le Norais. He also held land at Lincolnshire as Robert Norreis. Robert died after 1184. He is believed to have three sons born to him: Rober Le Norreys, of Bath, who died in 1253; Geoffrey Le Norreys, of Searby, Lancashire, died after 1250; and William Le Norreys, of Searby, Lincolnshire, died after 1260. Geoffrey Le Norreys, born about 1320, is believed to be a desendant of the son, Geoffrey Gaufrido Le Norreis. It is through this Geoffrey that Geoffrey Le Norreys is said to decend. Several members of his family carry the name into Norwich and Congham in County Norfolk. The names of the sons of Geoffrey Le Norreys, of Searby, Lancashire are not known at the present time. Geoffrey Le Norreys, born about 1320, would have been a great-great-grandson of Geoffrey of Searby.

                  v.    THOMAS NORRIS, b. Abt. 1608, Congham County, Norfolk, England; d. November 1675, Talbot County, Maryland.

Generation No. 9

THOMAS NORRIS (GEOFFREY NOREYS, JOHN, GEOFFREY, ROBERT, JOHN, GEOFFREY, GEOFFREY, GEOFFREY NORREYS) was born Abt. 1608 in Congham County, Norfolk, England, and died November 1675 in Talbot County, Maryland.  He married ANNE HYNSON 1637, daughter of THOMAS HYNSON.  She was born 1608, and died July 1668 in Talbot County, Maryland.

Thomas Norris was born about 1608 in Congham, County Norfolk, England. He ran away from home as a boy of eleven years of age and went to sea. He probably started out as a cabin boy and later became a sailor. He followed the sea for many years landing in Nansemond County, Virginia colony, about 1630 or 1631 and chose to remain in America. Descended from an old family of County Norfolk, England. He was the first member of the family to settle in the American colonies.

Upon returning to England, Captain John Smith (he is remembered for his role in establishing the first permanent English settlement in North America at Jamestown, Virginia) spoke with a young man by the name of William Claiborne (an English pioneer, surveyor, and an early settler in Virginia and Maryland), and told him of the land area that later would become Maryland. Claiborne first went to Virginia and mapped the entire state, becoming wealthy as a result. In 1628, Claiborne explored and found Palmer's Island and Kent Island. Liking these islands, he bought them from the Indians and set up trading posts. Having great success, Claiborne was granted a license from King Charles I, to trade in all areas of America not previously given to others. This gave Claiborne great power and status, making him similar in authority to a king.  Thomas Norris emigrated to St. Mary's County, MD colony, about 1634. He became associated with William Claiborne.

After his marriage to Anne, Thomas became a planter and was associated with his brother-in-law, Daniel Glover, who had married Ann's sister.

In 1634 Lord Baltimore settled in St. Mary's, Maryland and there ensued quite a controversy between Claiborne and Baltimore.  It is known that many of Claiborne's followers naturally moved to St. Mary's County during the time of the Claiborne-Baltimore controversy while some of them returned to Virginia.

There is record evidence that Thomas Norris was actually in St. Mary's County, Maryland during the year 1637, i.e.:
1. Thomas was married during the year 1637 to Ann, daughter of Thomas Hynson, of Nansemond Co, Virginia and Kent Island, Maryland, and transported her to St. Mary's County, Maryland in that year.
2. One Michael Luma died in St. Mary's County, Maryland some time during the year 1638, his will was probated 4 Jan 1639, and his estate was administered 7 May 1640 when the Provincial Court ordered the payment of his debts and among those to whom he was indebted was "Thos. Norris".

In 1643 Thomas Norris made a trip to Nansemond County, Virginia to the home of his father-in-law, he was reported by one John Carter who secured head rights. In 1647 he made another trip to "Nansemum" County, Virginia and was reported by one L. Pesters, who also secured head rights. It can be learned by following up many of these cases that some of the supposed immigrants in both Virginia and Maryland are really persons engaged in business and whoever transported them from colony to colony claimed land for bringing them into the Province.

Thomas Norris and Daniel Glover, were "Transported" to Talbot County, Maryland in 1663 at which time they assigned their rights for land to one John Morgan, of Talbot County; Morgan did not make use of those rights until the year 1665. (Land records disclose he specialized in "transporting" persons to and from Virginia to St. Mary's County, Maryland, and from St. mary's County to Talbot County, Maryland, thus securing head rights to land which he disposed of for a "consideration".

In 1665 Thomas Norris and Daniel Glover bought 400 acres of land jointly from Cornelius Comogys. Thomas Norris deeded his share of this land to William Lads on 26 July 1668, his wife did not appear in this deed.

In a Power of Attorney dated 20 June 1670 from Ann Hynson, wife of Thomas Hynson, Junior, to Thomas Norris, she empowers said Norris to represent her in the sale of a parcel of land called "Grayson's Rectified", granted to Thomas Hynson, Senior, Descd. The sale of this land is recorded on 20 June 1670, Thomas Hynson, Jr. to John Hynson, land on east fork of Wicklifffe being one half of 800 acres formerly owned by Thomas Hynson, decsd., father of said Thomas and John, etc.

In 1673 Thomas Norris, of Talbot County, Maryland had a grant of 200 acres of land called "Norrisdery", on Chester river.

On 6 November 1675 Thomas Norris, of Talbot County, Maryland, bricklayer, (son of Thomas Norris, Senior) deeded to John Power 200 acres of land on Chester river for 13,000 pounds of tobacco. In this deed the land is called "Marklinborough" and it appears identical with description of land granted above in 1673.

From the above record Thomas Norris, Senior, died just prior to Nov. 1675 and intestate. He was evidently negotiating the sale of the 200 acres of land at the time of his demise and it was concluded by Thomas Norris, Junior, oldest son and heir at law.  Ann Norris, his wife, was evidently deceased prior to July 1668 as she does not appear in the deed of that date as waiving dower, etc.

HESTER EVANS (ALICE NORRIS, THOMAS, GEOFFREY NOREYS, JOHN, GEOFFREY, ROBERT, JOHN, GEOFFREY, GEOFFREY, GEOFFREY NORREYS) was born Abt. 1645 in England, and died March 10, 1692/93 in Charles Co., MD Colony.  She married JAMES SMALLWOOD May 24, 1663 in Maryland Colony, son of MATTHEW SMALLWOOD and ANN WHITTINGTON.  He was born 1639 in Middlewich, Cheshire, , England, and died September 16, 1714 in Prince Georges County, Beau Plains, Maryland.

James Smallwood emigrated to America in 1664 and married Hester Evans in 1665. James and Hester lived in Zachia Hundred, Charles Co, MD. James applied for and received 100 acres as Hesters father had passed soon after arrival and had not claimed the land he was entitled to for transporting his family. James Smallwood was a member of Godfrey's Rangers in 1675, and again in 1681. Their main station was at Port Tobacco, with another at Piscataway Creek, of the Potomac. They guarded the settlement against the Susquehannock Indians. In 1688-89 he was involved in the Orange Rebellion, and advanced in military rank over the years. He was a major in 1692 and Lt. Col. in 1700, and afterwards a Colonel. In 1680 he was appointed "Post for Charles Co" for conveying "public intelligence" to the Governor and Council. This was the first letter post for outlying Charles Co. From 1692 until his death Col. James represented Charles Co as a Burgess in the MD Assembly. He often acted as liaison with the Indians, since he had their confidence. In 1694 he was Sheriff of Charles Co. On June 9, 1700 he is called Lt. Col James Smallwood, and shortly after that date his name is regularly prefixed with the title "Colonel". He aquired many parcels of land, including: Pork (Park) Hall, Batchelor's Hope, Welcome, Eltham, May Day, Taitsall, Coate's Lodge. At the time of his death he was living at Bew (Beau) Plains in Prince George Co which was the plantation of his second wife Mary. His will is dated 9-16-1712 and probated in Charles Co 1-12-1714/15
