    i. JOHANN CASPER NEIN, b. Abt. 1709, Schonsee, Germany; d. 1788, Oley Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania.

Generation No. 4

JOHANN CASPER NEIN (NIKOLAUS NEUN, HANS SEBASTIAN, HANS) was born Abt. 1709 in Schonsee, Germany, and died 1788 in Oley Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. He married BARBARA KRAUSS 1741 in Berks County, Pennsylvania. She was born August 03, 1714 in Schonsee, Germany, and died November 19, 1800 in Oley Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania.

Johann Casper Nein made two trips to Pennsylvania, arriving the first time October 2, 1727 on the galley "Adventure". Casper returned to Europe and then made his 2nd trip back to Pennsylvania, arriving October 5, 1737, aboard the Bilander "Townsend", master Captain Thomas Thompson, sailed from Amsterdam.

By 1741, Casper applied for land warrants from Pennsylvania County and received 100 acres in Albany Township. On January 14, 1741, he also received 70 acres, March 30, 1741 and another 30 acres November 8, 1741 - these last two in the Oley Township, Berks County.

Casper and his family settled in Oley Valley, he sold his land in Albany Township in 1764, the buildings on the land were burned by Indians.

The Oley Valley was first settled in 1712 and was established as a township of Berks County, PA in 1740. Before this time the area was considered Philadelphia County. Evidently, it was still necessary to register the land as Philadelphia County in 1741. The land warrants of Philadelphia County include: Casper Nuyn, 100 acres, January 14, 1741; Casper Nine, 70 acres, March 30, 1741; Casper Nein, 30 acres, November 1741.

Probably the 70 acres and the 30 acres was a record of action taken on part of the 100 acres and the 110 acres in the 1719 record includes the land Casper bought from his son, Sylvester.

The tax lists of Berks Couny indude Johann Casper Nein in the following: Oley Township:

1779 - & son, 110 acres, 2 horses, 4 cows); 1780 - 110 acres, 2 borses); 1784 - 110 acres, 2 COWS, 2 sheep; Exeter Township: (tax on land without settlement); 1779 - .20 on 20 acres; 1780 - 2 on 20 acres); 1781 - 5 on 20 acres); 1784 - (spelled New) no tax on 20 acres); 1785 - 2 on 20 acres);

In a document dated March 9, 1770 Casper of Oley bought land from Sylvester and wife Elizabeth for 54 pounds. In a document dated April 20, 1785 in Oley, Casper and Barbara sold land to Daniel for 280 pounds for 3 different tracts adjoining in Oley. (It appears the first tract containing 88 acres was Casper’s original property,-the second containing 7 acres seems to have been bought from Moses Heyman and wife Rebecca and the third tract of 12 aaes seems to be what Casper bought from Sylvester who bought it from Lee.)

Casper’s name also appears on the County Miscellaneous Court Records, May 23, 1949. The action was initiated by James and Grace Robertson and Paul L. and Anna Gebris to quiet title of land in Lower Alsace Township (along then Route 73, but now at 1823 Friedensburg Road) owned by Casper. In Mortgage Book BA", Page 1.24, dated May 17, 1768, Casper acquired this land from Michael Hoffman. Casper never lived on this land, and probably used it for woodland. Gehris sold his land to Robertson. Robertson broke up this land into three lots in 1955. The half toward Oley was divided into two parts and in 1955 sold to Edwin Charles Satter and Charles P. Troxel. The half toward Reading was bought by Richard E. Gerhart in 1956.

Johann Casper Neun married by 1741 and was farming in the Oley Valley. The original homestead stands today and is just off the Oley Turnpike Road. His children were all born in the Oley Valley. The original homestead stands on the farm presently owned by Mr. Fayerman. When Mr. Fayerman purchased the farm in 1985 he had the house completely remodeled, the barn enlarged and both the barn and the house repointed. A sketch of the home was made by Tom Nein and appears on the cover of the book. The home can be seen from the Oley Turnpike Road. Mr. Fayerman’s land begins at Mine Ore Road. The farm lays in the shadow of the reclaimed mountain of waste left by the quarry which is located on part of the original Nein farm. A family graveyard, surrounded by a beautifully restored stone wall, is located on a knoll in the middle of the cornfield. There is no tombstone for Casper and his wife, Barbara. Casper’s second son. Daniel and his second wife, Maria (Weidner), and three of Daniel’s children are buried there with stones. The "9" Family Association finances the care of the cemetery.

Many early Nein's are also buried in the Bertolet private cemetary, which is located on Henry Snyder's Bro's farm, also said to be the Experimental Farm, in Oley.  JOHANN NEIN and BARBARA KRAUSS: Burial: Nein Family Cemetary (grave unmarked)

Notes for JOHN LINEBAUGH:
Johannes moved to Greene Co., TN with his parents in 1790 or 1791 but he and Elizabeth Reisor were married in Shenandoah Co., VA. He laid claim to land in a disputed area between Hawkins Co, TN and what is now Scott Co, VA. The dispute was not settled until many years later. The end of Hawkins Co., TN and parts of three counties in VA were put together to form Scott Co., VA. That is the reason some of the children were born in TN and some in VA, although in all probability, John did not move.
Johannes Linebaugh's estate was administered on November 14, 1834 in Fountain Co., IN. He ay be buried in a small cemetery near the Lutheran Cemetery in Wallace, IN, which was subsequently bulldozed.

He married (1) EASTER BERTOLET December 01, 1779 in Oley, Berks County, Pennsylvania, daughter of JOHN BERTOLET and CATHERINE BALLY. She was born November 19, 1749, and died October 05, 1792. Daniel died on May 31, 1844 in Oley Township. Daniel is buried in the Nein Family Cemetery, Oley Township.  When Daniel died, a family fight ensued over who got the homestead and it's 200 acres. A jury trial resulted in an order to sell the farm and divide the proceeds, as it was impractical to divide the farm among six survivors. Mary Nine was able to reach a financial settlement with the other family members and take over the homestead. Mary never married. When she died, she left the homestead to her step-sister, Esther.
